@julia@efdn.club @xj9 the thing is that they don’t actually know, which is why tax fraud is a thing. They have to audit you to figure out how much you owe, which is an expensive process for them. Some people’s taxes are pretty easy and yeah the government should just tell you. But people who have complicated situations usually have information about what they owe that the government doesn’t so it’s pretty much relying on you being honest and not wanting to risk the chance of getting caught in an audit.

@kragen@nerdculture.de @kick It’s relevant to Jon Blow but it’s not relevant to his Wikipedia article. There’s a policy on Wikipedia that articles on living persons should have “only material relevant to the person's notability, focusing on high-quality secondary sources” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedi). Is Jon Blow notable for his height?

@ky0ko how important is the quality of the scripting language? Write your own?

@kick @kragen@nerdculture.de I just removed this information from his page as both unsourced and irrelevant so he can provide a citation if he really wants it there

i. it is better to delete code than to write code.

ii. the more code software has, the worse it becomes.

iii. the best software is that which does not exist.

iv. merely good programmers solve problems. truly great programmers do not confront them in the first place.

v. the greatest programmer of all is the humble farmer who spends his days in hard and honest labor growing food for his family and people, who has never in his life heard of a computer, and never will

@toffee imagine looking at a cat sitting comfortably on a field of grass. Flowers shifting gently in the wind. You go outside and pet the cat.

This has nothing to do with 3D graphics but I hope it helps

@sir @newt I agree with your principle, but that’s... not true? There’s a lot that entered the public domain this year - see “Entering the public domain in the United States” en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_i

@newt maybe you shouldn't be questioning the abolishment of copyright on the grounds that it's a necessary means for people to make a living, and instead question why people need copyright to _make a living_. Why is the human needs for food and shelter contingent on having a viable business model? Should we infringe upon the individual rights to share information for the sake of making that business model more viable - or should we maybe make sure that people's basic meets are met, period?

So yes, don’t automate your voting systems. You’re trading a little extra work for a loss of accountability, security, and confidence in the democratic process. Plus it might not even work.

Help finding depictions of positive masculinity in media, Please boost

Hey, so it's not too difficult to find games, movies, comics, etc that specifically depict powerful female protagonists and/or trans women because these works tend to specifically be labeled as such.

I have a friend, who is a trans man, that's trying to find works that depict inspiring male role models. He's trying to find works to better help him understand positive masculinity. Does anyone have any ideas?

@ben I am the bot. Ping me and I’ll get back to you in six to eight business days.

Python: better typed than you think

beepb00p.xyz/mypy-error-handli

It amazes me that once I thought about writing a `Result` type in Python, but I never thought about using `yield` for that (which is what the author did.)

Art project idea:
"Gendered" bathrooms with e-paper signs that change to different arbitrary symbols every day.

Symbol pairs will be chosen so that each day most people will manage to fit in but each day someone else would actually prefer a third/forth/fifth option.

Examples: Star Wars vs. Star Trek, Apples vs. Bananas, Vim vs. Emacs, Triangles vs. Squares, Coffee vs. Tea, …
you get the idea…
